The Community Unit School District 200 board approved a staff and student one‑to‑one device refresh after trustees debated educational benefits and potential harms of expanded screen time.
Board member Mr. Jerpy said he had concerns about 1:1 technology at earlier grade levels, citing international districts that have scaled back device programs and research about screen time impacts, but said he intended to approve the refresh this evening: “I do intend to approve this tonight,” he told colleagues. Another trustee emphasized the difference between providing devices and mandating all‑day screen use, noting devices support testing, e‑learning and equity when used appropriately.
Superintendent Dr. Schuler and staff asked trustees to share any research they want the district to review; the board asked staff to gather studies and to consider whether policy adjustments or usage guidance are needed. The motion to approve the device refresh carried on a roll‑call vote.
Trustees requested the finance and curriculum teams include any relevant research in upcoming reports and recommended bringing community advisory council (CAC) feedback into future technology and instructional decisions.
