Town staff presented clarified language to the sick-leave policy and an amended incident-reporting policy intended to improve clarity and manager guidance without reducing existing employee benefits.
A staff member said the updated sick-leave section breaks warnings into clearer categories and adds examples for common patterns (frequent Mondays/Fridays or before/after holidays) and notes when medical documentation or FMLA referral may be appropriate. The incident-reporting change establishes a "no later than 24 hours" expectation for submitting reports to supervisors instead of the prior vague "as soon as possible." "So, again, that's by end of shift, ideally...no later than 24 hours," the staff member said.
A council member moved to approve the updated policy language; the motion was seconded and approved unanimously, 5-0. Staff said the updates are intended to help managers identify patterns and to flag potential FMLA-qualifying events for follow-up, not to remove existing employee protections.
The council recorded the motion as approved 5-0 and staff will implement the clarified guidance and update the employee handbook.
