Provo City wildland‑urban interface staff told the North District neighborhood meeting about free home assessments and a seasonal mitigation program intended for the city’s highest‑risk areas.
"We do offer home assessments, meaning we will come take a look around your property, look at your home, and see kind of what your wildfire risk is," said the presenter (S9, introduced earlier as Ginny Afton). Staff urged homeowners to clear materials within 5 to 100 feet of structures, relocate stored firewood away from houses and consider replacing combustible roofing when doing renovations.
For homeowners in qualifying zones, the city runs a chipping program: residents cut and stack yard material in front of their home, scan a QR code to indicate the work is ready, and the city’s seasonal crew will chip and haul the material as green waste for composting. The presenter said the chipping crew operates seasonally (present year noted as May 4–Aug 13) and that the city is developing an interactive map on its website so residents can check eligibility for the program.
Staff described the program as both a risk‑reduction tool and a way to document in‑kind homeowner mitigation hours for grant match. They encouraged residents to contact the wildland‑urban interface staff with address details for a quick eligibility check and to request a home assessment.
The moderator closed the presentation by inviting attendees to sign up for neighborhood cleanup events and to email remaining questions to staff for follow up.
