The Genesee County Board voted to form a committee to explore creation of a Genesee County Sports Commission and approved multiple accommodation‑tax grants for local events after extended discussion about economic return, marketing recognition and whether to fund multi‑year contracts.
Following a site visit to Grand Rapids, commissioners who attended (Getzinger, Shoemaker, Avery and Chair Beverly Brown) recommended creating a committee to explore a county sports commission’s structure and functions. The board formed the committee and initially named four members who participated in the site visit.
Separately the board considered funding requests drawn from the county’s accommodation tax balance. Speakers representing events told commissioners their attendance and lodging impacts. Christian Miller, executive director of the Genesee County Agricultural Society, said the county fair attracts “approximately 100,000 attendees annually” and requested regional tourism advertising support. Nicole Scott (Midwest Invitational Rodeo) said last year’s event drew more than 7,000 attendees and asked for $20,000 per year to secure presenting‑sponsor status.
Commissioners pressed for accountability: several called for one‑year funding to allow post‑event evaluation rather than two‑year guarantees. Commissioner Sean Shoemaker repeatedly argued for outcome reporting and cautioned against locking the county into multi‑year financial commitments without clear ROI. Commissioners discussed roles for the convention and visitors bureau (CVB) and asked staff for pre/post event impact reporting.
Votes approved most funding requests, but with some amendments: the board agreed to separate and vote on individual items when requested, and accepted amendments to shorten some multi‑year commitments to one year where commissioners sought a trial period. Commissioners also asked that marketing materials accurately reflect host jurisdictions (e.g., Genesee Township vs Flint) when events take place outside city limits.
The new sports commission exploratory committee will return research and recommendations to the full board with a proposed scope, governance, and possible funding options. Commissioners indicated the committee should coordinate with Explore Genesee, the CVB and local stakeholders before proposing any county‑level commitments to build facilities.
