Newberry County Council took multiple routine legislative actions and proclamations during its meeting.
On unanimous votes the council approved three third-reading items: a text amendment to the zoning ordinance (allowing outdoor retail sales, Ordinance 03-02-2026), a text amendment establishing a penalty to building permit fees (Ordinance 03-03-2026), and two rezoning petitions (03-04-2026: rezoning property at Folk Road and Calvary Church Road, TMS 335-24, from limited commercial to rural R-2; and 03-05-2026: rezoning property at Leonard Field Road and US Highway 76, TMS 640-83, from RS single-family residential to R-2 rural). The council also took a second reading on the appropriation ordinance for fiscal year 2026–27 (Ordinance 04-01-2026).
Council adopted a proclamation recognizing May 2026 as National Small Business Week in Newberry County and a resolution honoring the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, telecommunicators, correctional officers and employees for public safety weeks and Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Why this matters: These ordinances and rezoning actions adjust local land-use regulations and fee structures and were moved forward by unanimous council votes. The proclamation and resolution are ceremonial recognitions of community institutions and events.
What happens next: The budget appropriation ordinance remains at second reading and will return for final action at the appropriate subsequent meeting; the other third-reading ordinances were adopted as shown.
