The Judicial Committee on Information Technology adopted Version 11 of its technology standards after a review and brief discussion about terminology used in justice courts.
Chair (speaker S1) moved that the committee "go ahead and include summary disposition with the notation, like we have done the other ones, that this is only applicable to the JP courts," and members approved the motion by voice vote. The chair said the version consolidates prior changes from Version 10 and adds new summary-disposition elements and other minor updates.
Why it matters: members flagged that justice courts often use the term "summary disposition" rather than "summary judgment," and that clerks or filers could mislabel motions without a JP-specific parenthetical in standards. The committee asked staff to verify whether the timing rules and the 500-series changes apply to JP courts before finalizing any ancillary rule text.
Justice Hawkins, the committee's new liaison, thanked members for the welcome and said she looked forward to working with the group. Todd Smith, a remote participant, confirmed his vote "aye" during the roll-call of remote attendees.
Next steps: the committee directed staff to check rule 166(a) and recent 500-series rule updates for any statutory or procedural implications, and to bring any clarifying language back at the June meeting. The chair said the adopted Version 11 can be updated later if further legal review indicates changes are needed.
The committee adjourned after confirming follow-up assignments.
