Mayor Robert Crowley read two proclamations at the May 4 City of Denison council meeting.
The first declared May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Denison and thanked Texoma ABATE and the Denison Police Department for safety education and community outreach. The mayor noted the role of organizations such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Texas Department of Transportation in promoting motorcycle safety. A council member (speaker 3) offered personal testimony about family members injured or killed in motorcycle crashes and thanked the city for the recognition: "I lost my aviation career because of a motorcycle wreck when somebody wasn't paying attention... we've lost 2 family members to motorcycles," the speaker said.
The second proclamation recognized Municipal Clerks Week and honored Chris Wallentine (city clerk) and Karen Avery (assistant city clerk) for their work maintaining records, supporting municipal elections and ensuring compliance with laws. The mayor presented the proclamation to the clerks and offered appreciation for the clerks' office.
The proclamations were presented near the start of the meeting; no formal vote was required. Council and staff made light-hearted remarks during presentations and thanked participants.
