Public commenters at the Dover Area School District meeting praised outgoing superintendent Dr. Catherine Hauck and urged the board to act on student‑safety and long‑term planning concerns.
Maria Wirtz read a statement written by her ninth‑grade grandson and urged the board to confront bullying directly. "Here is the word for tonight, bully," she said, outlining the district's own handbook definition and urging the board to enforce protections.
Jeff Shaner and Shyla Kramer both urged longer‑term thinking about enrollment declines and competition from charter and cyber schools. Shaner suggested the board study why families choose alternatives and asked whether operating programs such as the pool generate net revenue. "You have to look at it as a point of from a business perspective," he said, urging public discussion about where customers are going.
Several callers and board members also thanked Dr. Hauck for her service. The board noted receipt of Dr. Hauck's retirement letter and said it will take action to accept the retirement at next week's meeting.
What's next: the board will vote on the superintendent's retirement and other listed agenda items at its next regular meeting, and will incorporate public input into upcoming budget deliberations.
