Mayfair County hospital leaders updated the Meeker County Board on an ongoing building project, grant opportunities and local workforce changes, and raised concerns about a proposed Veterans Affairs clinic in Litchfield.
The hospital CEO (introduced to the board as Mary Ellen Wells) said the construction project is continuing and remains on budget so far, with several households moved and financing arrangements in progress. "We've got lots of work going on behind the scenes...we're coming in still nicely on budget," Wells said.
CFO Tyler presented a brief financial overview, reporting steady cash, a strong month in January and that year‑to‑date operating income through two months was about $706,000. Tyler said new balance‑sheet and income‑statement reports were being provided to trustees and managers to increase transparency.
Speakers discussed the federal rural health transformation funds and how states allocate portions to rural hospitals; hospital staff said Minnesota's allocation and state rules vary and that the application window had been extended. Wells said the hospital is carefully reviewing program criteria and vendor proposals.
Board discussion turned to a proposed VA clinic in Litchfield. Hospital leadership warned the clinic could cost the county hospital "at least $1,000,000 a year of lost revenue" and raise workforce competition for clinical staff and technicians. They said they would seek partnerships with the VA and continue outreach to legislators and the Minnesota Hospital Association to try to mitigate potential impacts.
No formal board action was taken on hospital requests; staff did report they will continue to monitor grants, bids and the VA RFP/lease process and may request additional assistance from county or state representatives as needed.
