Rockingham County commissioners used part of their May 4 meeting to recognize local student achievements, honoring Reedsville High School senior Deontay Neal and presenting top entries from a fourth-grade flag-design challenge.
The county manager introduced Deontay Neal as a decorated multi-sport athlete and scholar, citing consecutive Gatorade North Carolina player-of-the-year awards, MaxPreps state player recognitions, and career totals that included 2,739 points and more than 1,100 assists. The manager said Neal helped anchor teams that won multiple NCHSAA state championships and described Neal as “one of the most decorated student athletes in the history of Rockingham County.” The manager attributed a summary line to Coach Tee, saying, “Deontay's legacy is not defined by points and touchdowns, but his commitment to excellence in everything that he does.”
Lindsay Pegg, the county tourism manager, presented the America250 NC fourth-grade flag challenge, a statewide initiative in which Rockingham County was one of 23 participating counties. Pegg said nine county schools submitted 45 original designs and essays; she called up the top three student designers and described themes in their work, including local rivers, historical elements, and the Roanoke log perch. Pegg said the county digitized the students’ winning flags so the children could take home a keepsake version.
Commissioners and attendees applauded the students; the tourism manager thanked the school system, teachers, volunteers and the Rockingham County America250 County Committee and Board of Commissioners for supporting the project. There were no formal actions tied to the recognition items.
The board also announced the next regular meeting for Monday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. and adjourned.
