The Scituate School Committee voted May 4 to continue opting out of Massachusetts’ School Choice program for the 2026–27 school year, approved its April 27 minutes and declared surplus supplies including copier toner and leftover classroom furniture.
Superintendent Dr. Robinson recommended the district maintain its opt-out status under MGL c.76, saying the district lacks capacity to take additional nonresident students and that revenue from choice admissions would not offset the full cost of educating extra pupils. The chair moved the opt-out motion, it was seconded and carried by voice vote.
On routine business, the committee approved the April 27 minutes by unanimous vote. The committee also declared surplus a stack of copier toner and several pieces of furniture no longer needed after the district upgraded copiers and purchased new furniture for the new school. Staff said they have a buyer offering about $750 for the toner; the committee approved declaring items surplus and directed staff to attempt sale via the town’s online auction site or offer items free before recycling or scrap sale.
Next steps: staff will coordinate the disposal or sale of surplus items and implement the School Choice opt-out for the upcoming school year. No additional fiscal figures or legal citations beyond MGL c.76 were provided in the discussion.
