At its May 5 meeting the Bladen County Board of Commissioners approved advisory-board appointments and took action to forward a draft resolution concerning a proposed reappraisal moratorium to state legislators.
The board voted to replace Julie Ward and Marlo Grama on the Fire District Advisory Committee with Brenda Veil. The motion was made and seconded and passed by voice vote.
Separately, staff presented a draft resolution requesting an amendment to state reappraisal legislation described in the packet as "veil 8 89" (a reappraisal moratorium/change to the schedule of values). The draft would replace mandatory language to make the change permissive (change of the word "shall" to "may") and would seek to use the previous schedule of values in 2022 or delay reappraisal timing. Commissioners discussed the legal and procedural timeline and directed staff to gather signatures on the county's draft resolution so it could be sent to state legislators, including a named senator referenced during discussion.
The board also voted on a routine community-event request and approved it as a formality; there was no formal county financial obligation for the event permit. Before adjourning, a commissioner moved that the chairman and county manager prepare a sublease and lease related to a Broad Street property; that motion was seconded and the meeting adjourned.
