Residents used the public-comment period at the May 5 Elgin City Council meeting to invite the mayor and council to two community events in Litwick and to thank the city for past support.
Pamela Fowler, who identified herself as a local resident, invited elected officials to the Litwick Juneteenth Reunion June 19–20, saying the program will include multiple locations and a main celebration at the VFW on June 20. "We will celebrate family, heritage, and culture," Fowler said, and offered flyers and a website for event details.
Juan Hernandez urged volunteers to join a Litwick Community Cleanup on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to noon and said that last year 28 people helped collect about 100 bags of trash; organizers hope to double participation this year.
Anne Brockenbush reiterated the invitations and provided a rain date of June 6 for the cleanup.
In announcements, Heather Fowler, library services manager for the Elgin Public Library, told the council about upcoming programs including the Elgin Community Health Fair on May 23 (10 a.m.–1 p.m.) and Elgin Music in the Parks on May 8, and noted a pair of author and financial-planning events that had already taken place.
Mayor Teresa McShane also read proclamations recognizing May as Historic Preservation Awareness Month, Municipal Clerks Week (May 3–9) and Public Service Recognition Week (May 3–9), noting Elgin's founding in 1872 and the downtown historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The public-comment invitations and library announcements were informational; council did not take formal action on the events during the meeting.
