The Sugar Land City Council on May 5 issued proclamations recognizing Economic Development Week and Building Safety Month and heard brief updates from council members and the city manager on local events and awards.
Mayor Carol McCutcheon read a proclamation declaring May 2026 Economic Development Week, noting the role of the Department of Redevelopment and the Office of Economic Development and Tourism and citing 2025 sales-tax-related figures described by staff. Michelle McCrimmon, Assistant City Manager, asked the council to recognize the week and called up the city’s economic development and redevelopment teams.
The council also presented a proclamation for Building Safety Month; Joshua Doyle, the city’s chief building official, thanked colleagues in the fire marshal’s office, code enforcement and permits/inspections for their work to keep the community safe and introduced a short video on building safety practices. “My team knows, fire marshal knows code from permits. Everything you do really keeps Sugar Land safe one building at a time,” Doyle said.
During council reports, members highlighted recent community events — including a Rotary fundraiser, a FIFA tourism event, the Sugar Land Art Museum exhibit and a 70th-anniversary business ribbon-cutting. The City Manager noted recent national recognitions for the city, reporting that Sugar Land was listed among the most livable cities and cited additional accolades, and encouraged families to review the parks department’s summer camp schedule.
Mayor McCutcheon closed the meeting after handling council business and proclamations.
