Kent — The Kent City Council on Tuesday authorized two Public Works contract awards totaling roughly $5.2 million to fund street pavement preservation and trenchless sewer relining projects.
Public Works Director Chad Buren told the council the 64th Avenue South and West James Street pavement preservation project will reconfigure a four-lane section to a three-lane cross-section with a two-way left-turn lane and a buffered bike lane to provide a safer route near Kent Elementary School. CPM Development Corporation, doing business as ICON Materials, submitted the low bid of $2,123,617.05; the council voted 6-0 to award the contract and authorized the mayor to sign necessary documents subject to legal review.
Buren also described a 2026 sanitary and storm sewer cured-in-place pipelining project that renews existing pipe from the inside with resin material to extend service life while minimizing excavation. SAK Construction LLC was the low bidder at $3,088,909.20; the council approved that award 6-0 and authorized mayoral execution of the contract.
Council members praised staff for securing federal grant funds for pavement preservation and noted the pipelining approach reduces surface disruption. The public works director corrected a street name in the packet (West James Street, not "South James Street").
Both awards are subject to final terms and conditions acceptable to the city attorney and Public Works director.
