Commission sets expedited timeline to fill Tennessee House District 93 vacancy; some commissioners raise transparency concerns

The resolution set the application deadline for Tuesday, May 5, 2026, scheduled interviews for Wednesday, May 6, 2026, and provided for appointment on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Commissioner Sugarman moved the add-on; Commissioner Thornton seconded.

Commissioners raised concerns about the short notice. Commissioner Mills asked whether applicants would have time to prepare and called the timeline 'such a short notice,' and Commissioner Brooks said she was 'wrestling' with whether the compressed schedule provided adequate community transparency. Chairwoman Avant said the timeline was driven by a notice of vacancy from the governor's office and a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly and pledged a press release and social-media outreach to notify the public.

Commissioner Wright moved to suspend portions of Rule 36d to permit the commission to take up the addition; the motion to suspend was seconded and approved. Commissioner Clay Bibbs asked that typographical errors in the resolution's dates be corrected as a 'scribe error.' The clerk reported the final vote on the add-on resolution as 10 ayes and 1 abstain (Commissioner Mills). The commission said applications and interview information would be posted online and follow-up outreach would include press and social media.
