Several budget and capital items were presented to the committee on May 4.
Jackie McDonald McConnell described a state funding package of $1,877,500 to build a dedicated facility for basic law‑enforcement academies and training. McConnell said staff hope to put the project out to bid after council approval and begin construction in July.
Cole Wicker explained a two‑part state and federal FIFA grant to fund equipment purchases and overtime for fan zones and base camps this summer. He warned that state funds must be spent by May 31 and federal funds by June 30, prompting an SBO to move early to avoid last‑minute emergency requests.
A staff presenter introduced a purchase‑and‑sale agreement for 824 North Monroe listed at $2,100,000 with a leaseback provision for 12 months plus three optional 12‑month renewals. The building currently houses public defenders and prosecutors and would provide additional office space as caseloads and staffing needs grow; the leaseback is intended to ease timing of any relocation.
Council members asked about timelines, construction bidding and how the Monroe building would fit long‑term planning for public defenders and prosecutors; staff said the PSA represents the end of a real‑estate review process and that no immediate day‑to‑day changes would occur for those offices until planning proceeds.
No formal votes were recorded in the committee meeting; items were presented for committee consideration and likely will appear on the full council agenda.
