The Sierra Vista Unified School District governing board voted to hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. on May 12, 2026, to consider the consolidation of Village Meadows Elementary School.
Superintendent Terry Romo told the board administration and the governing board have "met all legal requirements for considering the consolidation of a school" and recommended scheduling the special meeting to satisfy the statutory timeline. The board voted to set the meeting date unanimously.
Romo said town-hall discussions had been held and that administration had addressed a range of concerns raised there. The superintendent noted the district would meet the statutory timeline after May 10, 2026.
During public comment, Tina Montoya said she has worked in the district for about seven years and criticized how recent decisions have been communicated to staff and families. "Our community, our staff, our students clearly showed on the survey that they did not want JCMS to close. And it felt like it was a slap to the face," Montoya said, adding some parents have said they would pull students if additional schools close, which could affect enrollment.
Board members said they were checking calendars and agreed to the 5:30 p.m. start time for the May 12 special meeting. The special meeting will be the next formal opportunity for the board to vote on the proposed consolidation; administration said the process is following the statutory steps required for school consolidation.
What happens next: the board will hold the public special meeting on May 12 at 5:30 p.m. to take formal action on the Village Meadows consolidation.
