Douglas County to host interactive trails-plan workshop May 27

Douglas County will host an interactive workshop on May 27 for the county’s Trails Plan update, Environmental Services Director Kent Hallman told commissioners on May 5.

Hallman said the workshop — part of the Western Douglas County Collaborative meeting — will feature the county’s consultant and invite public participation. He explained the planning role of different agencies, saying most metropolitan trail sections are maintained by cities such as Omaha, while some segments along Papio Creek are maintained by the Natural Resources District. "This particular planning effort is important because it identifies for future development where trails are expected to be, and especially where we are crossing rivers," Hallman said, adding that designing bridges to accommodate a trail up front can save taxpayer money.

Commissioners asked about how county trails differ from NRD- or city-operated trails; Hallman said Douglas County participates in planning but does not maintain most trails itself. The county encouraged interested residents and stakeholders to attend the May 27 workshop to provide input to the consultant.

Next steps: the consultant-led workshop on May 27; staff indicated follow-up as planning continues.
