The Parks & Recreation advisory board voted to select “Space” as the Parkland Day theme for 2027 after staff presented six options and board members discussed suitability for children and community engagement.
Felicia, an online staff presenter, outlined the six theme options — Space (tagline: “Parkland is out of this world”), Wild West, Jungle Safari, Multicultural, Superheroes and Circus/Carnival — and explained the themes were intended to guide parade decorations, the volunteer luncheon and musical selections. Board member 5 moved to pick the Space theme for 2027 and to retain the other options for future consideration; the motion passed after members voiced their approval.
Board members favoring Space said it would resonate with young attendees and tie into recent interest in space exploration; Chair (speaker 1) said the theme would help attract families and parade participants and echoed the tagline, saying, “Parkland is out of this world.” Felicia noted staff will support logistics for floats, bands and vendor coordination once the theme is finalized.
The board also agreed that themes not selected for 2027 would remain in the pool of ideas for 2028, allowing staff to revisit them in future planning. No specific changes to event funding or contracts were reported at the meeting; staff will proceed with planning under the selected theme and notify vendors and volunteers.
