Waite Park’s city council approved memoranda of understanding to implement summer work schedules—typically four 10-hour days—in public works and police administration, a practice the city has used for several years.
A staff member explained the practical arrangements: public works often operates on the 4x10 schedule with one person on call on Fridays; if an employee is on the on-call rotation they work a regular five-day schedule that week. For holidays that fall during the period, employees working four 10-hour days must use two hours of comp time or vacation to match the eight-hour holiday pay rule.
Staff said the MOUs apply to union-represented public works (Teamsters) and the LELS police admin unit, and that non-union administrative employees have the option at the manager’s discretion. Council moved and approved the MOUs for both units without recorded opposition.
