Chief Beal presented an overview of the Springfield Police Department's new wellness policy — a multi-page general order — and described measures taken and planned to support officer health. He told the council the department established a wellness team spanning mental, physical and nutritional specialties, refurbished the gym, and is standing up peer-support programming informed by best practices such as the "We Don't Walk Alone" network.
Chief Beal said every officer will complete a "wellness recovery action plan," a personalized action plan to identify baseline wellness and stressors, and that the department is exploring benchmark software (predictive analytics) to flag cumulative trauma indicators for supervision review. He also said the department went through a rigorous process to obtain an ADA-compliant comfort/comfort dog from California and expects to fly out June 18 for the dog and handler's training; the handler will complete 10 days of training with the dog before the animal is returned to Springfield.
Council members thanked the chief and asked clarifying questions about program reach. Alderwoman Conley said she hoped the measures would provide support and relief to officers and praised the family academy concept to involve relatives in understanding department wellness resources.
Next steps: Chief Beal will work with staff on rollout and training logistics; council has the option to discuss benchmark software costs in future budget conversations.
