Council and staff used a substantial portion of the workshop to review street-maintenance funding and project prioritization.
Staff (S2) said the city’s major DD total is about $1,032,842.55 and that council direction had been to allocate approximately $900,000 for street repairs; an additional $60,000 was discussed for smaller patch and maintenance items. Staff detailed proposed near-term projects (First Street, a Franklin segment and early-phase work on Jefferson) and cautioned that right-of-way acquisition could add cost and slow some projects, particularly Jefferson and Clark.
Why it matters: Pavement and sidewalk repairs were repeatedly raised by residents and councilors as visible evidence of local government performance. Repair choices also affect grant eligibility and matching requirements for Sonoma competitive funds and other state programs.
Council and staff discussed how to split work into smaller contracts to move projects quickly, possible use of SB1 funding (with a July resolution deadline for certain lists), and the tradeoffs between doing an entire large project at once versus several smaller projects. Staff said one lane-specific informal bid for a section of First Street returned about $93,222 for grinding and repaving; members argued some smaller, targeted repairs could get done faster and show results to the community.
Representative quote: “We’re in prime time to get some stuff done right now,” Chair (S1) said, urging the council to finalize a coherent list so contractors can be engaged as soon as possible.
Ending: Staff will return a finalized top-5 street list and associated cost estimates for the budget workshop and prepare any SB1 resolution language needed for council consideration before the July submission deadline.
