A public commenter played a 25‑second dash‑cam video showing a close collision on Archer Road at SW 154th Street and urged the board to accelerate safety fixes at the access to Jordan Glen, a school access road.
Sadie Darnell, a longtime Gainesville resident and former public safety worker, told the board five children under 12 were in the vehicle in the video and described repeated crashes at that access; she said full widening of Archer Road is scheduled for 2029 but urged interim actions such as a left‑turn lane, a flashing orange beacon and lowering the posted speed limit. Jennifer Fancher, who identified herself as the driver in the video, told the board she wants the approved improvements to be prioritized sooner because the crash was not unique.
Board members thanked the speakers, asked FDOT and county staff to review the crash video and to investigate options to move up improvements or add interim safety treatments. Several commissioners asked staff to research school zone designation rules and who is responsible for initiating them (county engineer, FDOT or public works) and directed TPO staff to research and report back.
Why it matters: The comments highlighted a specific, documented near‑miss involving children and prompted elected members to ask staff and DOT to consider accelerating safety work or interim measures ahead of long‑term widening.
What’s next: TPO staff and FDOT district representatives will review the crash evidence, check prior studies and report back on feasible interim safety options and the process for school zone designation.
