Council approves Polaris Ranger after debate over cost and fleet needs

After a lengthy discussion about capital priorities and equipment redundancy, the Red Bud City Council voted to purchase a 2-door Polaris Ranger 1000 from Greenmount Road Harley-Davidson.

Council member (S6) had asked whether the city would use a roughly $26,000 side-by-side often enough to justify adding it to the fleet rather than replacing older equipment. "I just don't know how much we would really use it for $26,000," S6 said, pressing for clarification on frequency of use and the decision-making process for capital purchases.

Staff member (S7) responded that the vehicle would serve multiple operational roles — including gas-main inspections, spraying in places trucks cannot reach, park maintenance and potential plow attachments — and cited operational efficiency across roughly 47 miles of gas main in town. "We have 47 miles of main in town ... it allows them to be able to get through that every wall," S7 said, arguing the unit would save staff time and enable safer, faster inspections.

Council members pressed for comparative quotes and questioned whether the city should retire older equipment as a replacement strategy rather than add another vehicle. S7 said the administration had obtained quotes from multiple vendors (including Kubota and Bobcat) and that the capital plan contained funds for this item; staff also said that per finance guidelines, items already in the capital plan could be bid without prior council approval though council would still review before purchase.

After discussion, Council member (S4) moved to purchase the Polaris Ranger and Staff member (S7) seconded; the motion passed by roll call.

Next steps: staff will finalize the purchase order and schedule delivery; council asked that staff continue to provide comparative costing and lifecycle data for future capital purchases.
