The La Paz County Board of Supervisors approved an annual maintenance and support agreement with BY2 Technologies to provide iris-recognition hardware and software for inmate identification and related services.
The county will receive the system at no charge for the first year as a trial; if the board continues the service, the agreement calls for a yearly cost of $4,826.10 beginning in the second year. A commander from the county's corrections or law enforcement staff described iris patterns as a biometric tool similar in uniqueness to fingerprints and said the system will help identify uncooperative individuals or those with multiple identities in the county database.
The board voted to approve the agreement after a short explanation from staff and a motion and second. Staff indicated the item was budgeted and would have no fiscal impact for the current year.
Next steps: the county will accept the free first year trial and can choose to continue the service in future years under the stated annual fee.
