Maple Valley studies options for indoor recreation facility; small groups report back after consultant presentation

A study-session presentation on options for a proposed indoor recreation facility took center stage at the Maple Valley City Council meeting with the Parks & Recreation Commission on April 20, 2026.

BerryDunn consultant Dannielle Wilson facilitated the presentation and walked councilmembers, commissioners and staff through alternatives and considerations for facility type, scale and potential next steps. After the presentation, the meeting recessed at 7:55 p.m. for small-group discussions; the session reconvened at 8:10 p.m. and participants shared the outcomes of those conversations.

Councilmembers and commissioners discussed facility planning factors including siting, program needs and public engagement; no formal direction to staff or final decisions were recorded during the session. The Parks Capital Improvement Plan agenda item scheduled for the same meeting was not discussed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

A motion to extend the study session to 9:00 p.m. carried 6-0, allowing additional time for group reports and brief council comment. The meeting adjourned at 8:58 p.m.

Next steps noted during the session included follow-up work by staff and consultants to refine options and a future agenda item to review the Parks Capital Improvement Plan once it is rescheduled.
