The Cass County Commission took first reading of a resolution to dispose of 37 lots in Lot Number 2 of Riverside Cemetery and scheduled a public hearing for June 1.
County staff said the Riverside Cemetery Association (RCA) recently asked to purchase the 37 county‑owned cemetery lots. "All these lots are within Riverside Cemetery...RCA and the county were able to determine that these lots were sold to the county back in the late 18 eighties, for a collective price of $560," staff said. The staff presentation included a map of the lots and noted the county holds title.
Legal and fiscal context: staff told the commission that under state law property with a value greater than $1,000 must be sold either by public sale or by resolution; the draft resolution would dispose of the 37 lots for $19,125. Staff asked the commission to set a public hearing to consider the resolution during the June 1 meeting.
Motion and next steps: a commissioner moved to approve the first reading and set the public hearing for June 1; following a second and a roll call the chair announced the motion carried. The matter will return to the commission at the June 1 meeting for the second reading and public hearing before any sale is completed.
