Decatur honors residents, pastor and firefighters after apartment fire

The Decatur City Council and Fire Department publicly recognized residents and a pastor whose actions aided neighbors during an apartment fire on March 31.

Chief Springer described the incident, saying responding crews "encountered heavy fire conditions throughout the structure" and that eight apartment units sustained significant damage, displacing 13 residents. He thanked community members whose help eased the emergency response and relief efforts.

Chief Springer singled out Leah Glenn for going "door to door to alert residents and assisted 1 family in carrying their small children out of the building as it filled with smoke," and he presented her with a certificate of recognition for her courage. He also recognized Pastor Ted Amy and members of Stone River Church for opening their doors and providing shelter, food and support to displaced families within an hour of the fire.

Mayor Kent Lawrence praised the community response and urged continued civic support for those affected. The council’s recognition occurred as part of its opening ceremonial items; no council action was required to present certificates of appreciation.
