District recommends PFAS‑free artificial turf for future school fields

Worcester — The subcommittee heard a recommendation on May 4 to move future field installations to PFAS‑free artificial turf.

An administration official summarized a district turf committee report that recommends transitioning to PFAS‑free artificial turf for future installations to reduce student exposure to "forever chemicals," limit groundwater risk and increase field availability. "By moving away from the traditional synthetic materials, the district would be looking to deliver a more modern infrastructure that includes oversight of health and environmental safety by eliminating exposures to forever chemicals," the administrator said.

Administration acknowledged PFAS‑free and alternative turf systems carry higher upfront costs but said the long‑term efficiency from reduced water use, fewer inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, and lower ongoing maintenance can offset those costs. The report noted that synthetic surfaces also substantially increase usable hours compared with natural grass.

Vice Chair McCullough said she supported the move to safer materials and highlighted the benefits of increased field availability given New England weather. Committee members asked administration to confirm whether the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents has issued guidance on turf choices; administration agreed to follow up and provide that information.

The subcommittee voted to approve and file the turf committee report and recommendation.
