Inframark reports treatment issues resolved; Yanceyville wastewater briefly exceeded permit limits

At the May 2 Yanceyville Town Council meeting, Gary Stainback of Inframark presented a monthly operations update for the town's water and wastewater treatment plants, describing recent sampling results and recent repairs.

Stainback told council that disinfection-byproduct running averages for trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids at the water plant were compliant and that Total Organic Carbon readings improved after optimizing the carbon chemical feed. Staff are collecting distribution samples and coordinating hydrant flushing as needed; a water-quality concern reported April 12 yielded compliant bacteriological results after testing.

At the wastewater treatment plant, Stainback reported that a malfunctioning decanting valve led to elevated effluent biological oxygen demand (BOD) and ammonia nitrogen above permit limits. Repair contractor Underwood performed follow-up service on April 24 to correct valve cycling; Underwood also delivered new bar-screen plates and Inframark provided additional staff and a portable pump to remove solids from the effluent tank and chlorine contact chamber. Stainback reported the system returned to normal operation after the repairs and interim solids removal.

Mayor Alvin Foster thanked Stainback for the report. The council did not take action beyond receiving the update; the Inframark report and equipment work items will be handled by town staff and contractors.

What happens next: Inframark and town public works will continue sampling, apply the updated carbon feed settings, and coordinate any additional mechanical repairs or replacement options for the influent bar screen.
