The Scott County Board of Supervisors set priorities for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) secondary six-year plan after a presentation outlining available funds, traffic counts and possible projects.
Joey Mullins, assistant resident engineer for VDOT, told the board the department reviewed suggested routes and estimated about $850,000 would be available to add new projects. Mullins flagged several projects that would complete gaps on previously funded corridors and provided traffic-count and eligibility notes for each candidate.
After discussion about traffic counts and phasing, supervisors agreed on a package that would fully fund Dingus Hollow Phase 1 and Hunters Valley East and partially fund Timber Tree Branch with remaining funds, leaving the board to finish funding the Timber Tree segment next year. The board directed staff to include those priorities in the draft plan and set a public hearing in May on the six-year plan.
Chair and multiple supervisors said the choices were driven by traffic counts and the desire to finish previously started segments rather than spread limited funds to many small projects. VDOT staff said final project selection and inclusion in the adopted six-year plan will depend on the May public hearing and VDOT's final allocations.
What happens next: VDOT will draft the plan including the board's choices, staff will schedule the May public hearing and supervisors will consider final adoption after public comment and VDOT review.
