The Franklin Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to authorize a pilot telescope-lending program that will let patrons borrow a telescope through an appointment-based checkout handled by a local astronomy club.
The vote follows a motion from a trustee to allow the director to enter a pilot program agreement with the telescope-lending program. Trustees discussed logistics including the agreement counterparties, storage, inspection and training responsibilities and scheduling.
The director said the library would provide “a safe locked cabinet to house the instrument,” and the board discussed placing the telescope in the library’s tech room and securing it for transport. Trustees emphasized that club volunteers would meet borrowers, demonstrate use, and inspect the telescope on return so that library staff would not be responsible for training or repairs.
A trustee said the arrangement could be flexible: frequent borrowers might need fewer inspections, and the club could set loan durations and check procedures. Another trustee described the instrument as easy to use and well suited for newcomers.
