The Vernon County Health Department briefed the Board of Health on environmental-health work, including results of a Department of Natural Resources nitrate laboratory audit and coordinated watershed outreach.
Amy Kleiber said a DNR inspector spent 4.5 hours onsite at the VCHD lab on March 2 and that a formal audit report will arrive within 30 days. Kleiber identified two remediation items noted during the audit: recommended changes to reporting forms and the need for ongoing level-of-detection (LOD) studies.
Kleiber also summarized regional environmental collaboration: staff who attended a Coon Creek Watershed meeting reported that counties in the region (Vernon, Richland, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette, Crawford and Green) will pursue monthly educational outreach and adopt a coalition logo for media promotions. VCHD staff plan a joint flood- and water-safety event on May 2 at the Coon Creek Confluence.
Other program updates included completion of NEARS training for the agent program and WIC notes: DuCharme attended the WALC breastfeeding conference virtually and staff cited an April 19 USDA rule change affecting WIC (expanded whole-grain requirements and increased milk quantities, including milk alternatives). No formal board actions were recorded on the audit or outreach items.
