Granite Falls schedules Nov. 14 comprehensive plan workshop; staff report project delays and a large claims addition

The Granite Falls City Council scheduled a joint Council and Planning Commission workshop on Nov. 14, 2023, from 7 to 9 p.m. to review priority topics in the Comprehensive Plan periodic update. Community Development Director Eric Jensen and Planning Commissioner Chair Fred Cruger said the session will use a round-table format and begin with discussion of Parks Property.

During staff reports, Deputy City Manager Jeff Balentine described multiple Public Works items: the Galena Street project is delayed because materials are backordered; McDaniel's Hardware is expected to open April 1; water meter readings have been completed; a failed backflow assembly at Old City Hall is being repaired; and staff are obtaining quotes for interior renovations. Balentine also reported finance-related items, including an additional $270,000 in Transportation Improvement Board funds for Galena Street and completion of N. Alder Avenue work by Gray & Osborne.

Balentine told the Council he had added a claims check to the consent agenda: check #413775 payable to D&G Backhoe in the amount of $237,044.53. Councilmember Steven Glenn moved to approve the consent agenda with that change, Councilmember David Griggs seconded, and the motion carried.

Consultant Police Chief Tom Dalton reported on department activity and raised possible equipment requests, including funding for "piranha" stop sticks for patrol cars and noting that the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office is deploying a pepper gun that uses pepper balls.

There were no public comments during the public-comment portion of the meeting. The Council concluded with member comments about Railroad Days, street sweeping, and a planned tree-lighting ceremony.
