Granite Falls staff report infrastructure, planning and community events ahead of Feb. 20 open house

City staff briefed the Granite Falls City Council on routine operations, planning work and upcoming community events during the Feb. 7 meeting.

Police Chief Tom Dalton said the Snohomish County Sheriff and Police Chiefs Association met at City Hall Jan. 25 and reported staffing notes including that Deputy Thorne is expected to return soon. Dalton also referenced a recent incident on Mt. Loop Highway, noting a homicide at Camp Silverton, and mentioned school-related fights and arrests; no additional operational actions or policy changes were proposed at the meeting.

Community Development Director Eric Jensen outlined planning items: a Planning Commission meeting scheduled for next week, presentation of a Draft Housing Element chapter, work on a Racial Disparity Impact Assessment and historic-preservation planning. Jensen said staff has contacted the University of Washington and Western Washington University about partnering on an urban design studio to develop conceptual site plans for a proposed community center.

City Manager Brent Kirk summarized public-works updates including replacement of a radar sign on S. Granite, repairs to a frozen/broken hydrant meter, decommissioning of a copper prospect water line, work on Galena Street and Granite Place water lines (including a buckled section on Galena Street), Stanley Street design work and elevated run times at the Suncrest Farms lift station. Kirk announced a public open house scheduled for Feb. 20 to discuss project(s).

Deputy City Manager Jeff Balentine provided updates on the Wastewater Treatment Plant project, passport close-outs and new dashboards for city review.

Councilmembers also used their comments to highlight community activities and concerns, including local fundraisers, school infrastructure issues and an upcoming Show N' Shine event. No policy votes were taken on these operational or planning items at the meeting.
