Oneida County panel rescinds appointment, approves election process for Veteran Services Officer

The Oneida County Human Services Committee on Feb. 9 rescinded a Feb. 4 resolution that attempted to appoint a Veteran Services Officer and approved an updated resolution requiring the position be elected by the county board, the committee's minutes show.

County staff member Hartman told the committee that the earlier resolution did not follow the language set forth in state statute and that the Veteran Services Officer must be elected rather than appointed; Hartman also said additional term-language was needed. Hartman stated the updated draft left the previously proposed effective date and wages unchanged.

Chairman Robb Jensen moved to rescind the Feb. 4 appointment resolution; Dan Hess seconded. The committee recorded 6 ayes, 0 nays and 3 absent, and the motion carried. Later in the meeting Hess moved to approve the updated resolution to elect the Veteran Services Officer and request overlap training; Steven Schreier seconded. That motion also passed 6-0 with three members absent.

The actions mean the county will follow an election process by the board to fill the Veteran Services Officer role rather than using an appointment procedure that had been proposed on Feb. 4. The minutes do not specify the effective date or wage figures beyond noting they remained as in the prior draft, nor do they name the particular state statute cited.

The committee set its next meeting for Feb. 25, 2026. Chairman Jensen adjourned the meeting at 8:51 a.m.
