School Committee outlines changes to 2026–29 district improvement plan, sets feedback deadlines

The Marblehead School Committee heard a detailed update on the draft 2026–29 district improvement plan and agreed on a schedule for final feedback and approval.

Superintendent John told the committee the draft was revised after iterative review with administrators, staff and parents and that new language addresses artificial intelligence and digital literacy; a review of classroom technology use and screen-time balance; expanded mentoring and professional development for new teachers and administrators; online safety and anti‑cyberbullying partnerships with caregivers; and clarified restorative-practice expectations across grades.

John said the committee can provide feedback by email or through an online survey; he asked the committee to submit comments by May 8, so staff can synthesize edits for committee discussion on May 21 and, if ready, a final vote no later than the June 4 meeting. He characterized the process as iterative and emphasized that not every improvement strategy in the plan will be completed in three years, but the district should set measurable deliverables and revisit priorities in annual updates.

Committee members pressed for clearer assessment evidence and deliverables tied to each objective, arguing that listing “meetings” as evidence is insufficient to show progress. One committee member recommended adding a specific “deliverables” field to each objective so the superintendent can state how staff will measure success. John said he would incorporate more specific evidence and timelines where appropriate and return an updated draft.

The committee discussed public engagement and outreach tied to the plan and the upcoming override vote. Members supported continuing open office hours and scheduled public Q&A sessions — with careful attention to posting and meeting-minute rules — to help residents understand the tiered override options and how school requests relate to town budgeting.

The committee did not take a final vote on the plan at the meeting; the superintendent will revise the draft based on the feedback timeline agreed by the committee.
