Public commenters urge cooperation on budget disputes; Henrico NAACP praises Black History Month efforts

During the public‑forum portion of the Henrico County School Board’s April 30 meeting, multiple speakers urged the board to focus on collaboration and celebrated community programming.

Bill Pike, a retired educator, told the board he was “worrying” after reading recent media coverage of budget disputes between the school board and the Board of Supervisors. Pike said public posturing can damage working relationships and make it harder to meet students’ needs. He urged the board to prioritize relationship‑building over public argument, saying, “I grow nervous when I read in the Henrico citizen about the budget bickering between our Henrico County School Board and Board of Supervisors.” He noted the scale and complexity of current budgets and appealed for cooperation as officials finalize priorities.

Representatives of the Henrico NAACP’s education committee followed. Frank Callahan thanked the board for support of Black History Month programming and described several events that brought elected officials into classrooms via video conferences and in‑person visits. L. Frances Brown, who identified themself as a retired Henrico County Public Schools psychologist and NAACP secretary, presented a certificate recognizing Alicia Atkins for her commitment to Black History Month activities and said the NAACP also presented a commemorative T‑shirt.

Chair Irving thanked all public commenters for their remarks. The board did not respond during the forum; staff follow‑up was offered to individual speakers. The meeting continued with consent‑agenda approvals and other recognitions.
