Commission approves speed cushions near Shadow Ridge High School after resident concerns

The Las Vegas Traffic and Parking Commission on April 30 approved installing speed cushions on several residential streets west of Shadow Ridge High School to reduce speeding and cut‑through traffic.

Ravi Sierra, city traffic engineer, told the commission staff identified a significant level of cut‑through traffic and recommended speed cushions because national guidance supports traffic calming in similar contexts. "Speed cushions reduce excessive speeding by approximately 20 to 25% and may also reduce traffic volumes by discouraging cut‑through behavior," Sierra said.

Kyle Alkraz, who said he lives at 8653 Palomino Ranch Street, told commissioners he supports the cushions because "we have a lot of kids that are playing" in the area and drivers use the neighborhood as a shortcut; he also said nearby construction on Iron Mountain Road will likely push more traffic into the neighborhood.

Commissioners expressed agreement with staff's safety rationale and moved to approve the installations. The commission recorded three 'Aye' responses and no recorded opposition, adopting the measure for the Ward 6 locations named on the agenda.

Staff noted the devices are designed to allow emergency vehicles to pass with minimal delay and that the fire department reviewed and supports the installation. No implementation timeline or installation date was specified during the hearing.
