Commission lowers posted speeds on segments of Centennial Parkway

The Las Vegas Traffic and Parking Commission on April 30 approved reductions to posted speeds along segments of Centennial Parkway after staff presented an engineering study.

Ravi Sierra, city traffic engineer, said the corridor's 80th‑percentile speed was "approximately 9 miles per hour above the current posted speed limit," and that speed‑setting follows an engineering process considering roadway characteristics, the presence of vulnerable users and multimodal activity.

Staff recommended lowering the posted limit from 45 to 35 mph on the segment from Schaumburg Road to Holopai Way, reducing 45 to 40 mph from Holopai Way to Durango Drive, and reducing 40 to 35 mph from Durango Drive to Grand Montecito Parkway to better align the posted limit with the roadway's function.

Commissioners asked about the city's speed‑setting software tool developed under its Vision Zero action plan; staff offered to provide additional detail from the staff member who worked on the tool. Commissioner Lang moved to adopt the changes and the commission approved the motion by recorded voice (three 'Aye' responses captured on the transcript).
