Chair opened the Portage County Executive Operations Committee meeting and reviewed the agenda, including Item 4: appointments and reappointments to county committees. After introducing the slate, the chair explained the vetting process: “we gathered all the names and request for preferences for each 1 committee assignments,” and the committee discussed candidates’ experience and fit.
A committee member proposed an amendment to swap a supervisor with accounting experience onto the finance committee and move another supervisor to parks to reflect municipal and budgeting backgrounds. The amendment was seconded and debated; members emphasized balancing workloads and committee counts across supervisors. The committee discussed whether the panel had authority to amend county executive appointments and concluded amendments limited to executive operations committee appointments were in order per the ordinance language cited.
Following discussion, the committee voted to approve the amendment to swap the supervisors’ committee assignments. The committee later approved a separate motion to remove a supervisor from the finance seat and replace that seat with another supervisor; members described the change as intended to align technical backgrounds with committee responsibilities. Both amendments were approved by voice/hand vote and the chair declared the motions carried.
The committee then moved, seconded and approved confirmation of various county executive appointments and reappointments. Chair noted some citizen-member seats remain vacant and that certain appointments (for example, lake district representation) are countywide and may be filled with regard to background and interest.
Actions recorded in the meeting included the approval of minutes and multiple motions relating to committee assignments and confirmations. Several members urged staff to follow up with prospective citizen members to fill outstanding vacancies.
The committee adjourned after confirming the appointments on the slate.
