The presiding officer led a ceremonial oath of office for alderpersons representing Districts 1 through 12, asking them to stand and repeat a pledge to support the constitutions of the United States and the State of Wisconsin.
After the oath, the presiding officer recognized outgoing council members with commemorative street signs and thanked them for their service. He singled out several long-serving members and praised the Department of Public Works for preparing the signs.
In remarks to new and returning members, the presiding officer offered “10 principles” for doing the work of the city: focus on providing basic local services rather than partisan politics; respect city staff; build relationships rather than burning bridges; be patient and listen; balance competing budget priorities; and take a long-term view. He cited the administration’s use of American Rescue Plan Act funds in 2021 to complete a West Side park as an example of prioritizing infrastructure that benefits future generations.
“Work with your colleagues and our city staff to keep moving forward, even if only an inch at a time,” the presiding officer said, urging new members to seek consensus and to remember that elected officials will be judged by their impact on the community.
The remarks closed with a reminder about routine committee processes and a call to begin council business for the evening.
