The village administrator reported that recent rerouting of the 294 south ramp off Archer Avenue has created traffic problems on the village's east end and said he has asked the state for changes to reduce illegal U-turns and confusion.
The administrator said he traveled to Springfield with local officials to meet state representatives while the state budget was being finalized and that he sent about 40 photos and a list of concerns to the new state representative, who raised the issue with state transportation staff. “So she had a meeting with [IDOT], and we expect them to put up some additional signage,” the village administrator said, adding that the agency is also looking at pavement markings to make the detour route more obvious.
The report noted that Willow Springs Police have been enforcing illegal U-turns and placing cones at the site but that additional engineering and signage from IDOT are needed. The administrator described the road as unusually wide in spots, which can make detour signage less visible to motorists. “We need more,” the administrator said, praising recent targeted enforcement by the police.
Why it matters: officials said the reroute is creating safety and traffic-flow problems on a frequently used arterial. The administrator also warned that, even after short-term fixes, pavement markings and clearer detour geometry may be required to change motorist behavior.
Next steps: the administrator said he expects continued follow-up with IDOT through the new state representative; the board did not take formal action at this meeting but recorded the report for future monitoring.
