Laurel FFA students describe state competition success, invite community to free agricultural carnival

Laurel High School agriculture teacher Mindy Fuller told the Laurel School District board that the school's FFA chapter provides students hands-on experience and leadership training that extend beyond farming. “The FFA is a premier national youth organization that empowers our students in agriculture, leadership, and career development,” Fuller said.

Addison (Addie) Wright, the chapter president, outlined the chapter's regular activities and competitions and said the group emphasizes service learning. “Our main event is competitions,” Wright said, describing career and leadership development events, chapter fundraisers and monthly meetings that build leadership and teamwork. She invited the public to an agricultural-themed carnival the chapter is hosting Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the high school parking lot, which will include a petting zoo, games, snacks and a plant sale.

Vice president Ron Wojer and secretary Claire Ross described the chapter's recent statewide trip: the group took roughly 10 teams to the state convention, put in “over 18 volunteer hours,” competed in eight career development events and one leadership development event, and participated in student workshops and service projects. Wojer and Ross said the students also helped run the Montana FFA alumni store during the event, gaining customer-service and money-handling experience.

Fuller and the student officers said the chapter's activities support scholarships and career readiness. Fuller urged the board and the community to support expanding practical learning spaces such as shop or CTE facilities so students can build larger projects and compete at higher levels.

The board thanked the presenters and moved on to routine business.
