House designates April 23, 2026 as Autism Acceptance Day and urges expanded support

Representative McDonald presented House Resolution 299 to designate April 23, 2026, as Autism Acceptance Day in Michigan, and urged colleagues to cosponsor and support the measure. McDonald cited national prevalence figures — saying "1 in 31 children in this country is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder" — and estimated that roughly 322,000 individuals in Michigan are on the autism spectrum, including more than 30,000 school-age children.

McDonald said autism presents with a range of support needs under DSM‑5 levels 1–3 and called for policies that ensure early diagnosis, evidence-based supports, inclusive education and workplace accommodations. Drawing on personal experience as a former reporter and as a parent, McDonald urged lawmakers to listen to autistic individuals themselves and to build systems that meet diverse needs. The resolution was adopted by the House.
