The policy committee discussed a new Policy 111 draft on lesson planning aimed at codifying expectations while preserving teacher flexibility.
Mrs. Petrie said the draft requires lesson plans to be prepared prior to instruction and revised as needed based on formative assessment; plans should be available for inspection by department leaders, principals, or the superintendent when requested. She also highlighted the need for substitute plans.
Board members cautioned against mandating rigid advance-submission timelines, saying that asking teachers to submit detailed packets weeks in advance would reduce flexibility to respond to student needs. Staff noted that planning and preparation already appear in the annual teacher evaluation and that the policy would provide additional clarity in cases of underperformance.
The committee asked staff to convert the draft into a formatted policy and bring it back to the committee of the whole for further discussion.
