Rec center project moves into schematic design as public engagement begins

Kevin Knopfel, the project representative, updated the Valparaiso City Board of Works that the rec center contract has been signed and the project team held a kickoff meeting with about 15–16 participants including city officials and the consultant team. Knopfel said the project team will meet every two weeks to advance schematic design work and refine programmatic needs.

Knopfel said public engagement will start as early as next week, with a cadence of surveys (a new survey each week) designed to gather community input on program elements and ideas. He described schematic design as roughly 30% of the overall design process and said that stage will take about two to three months. “We did confirm our public engagement plan, and so the public can start seeing things as early as next week with surveys that we're gonna ask them to respond to,” Knopfel said.

Board members noted that the schematic design will inform later budget decisions and emphasized the importance of drilling down on community needs rather than assuming requirements. The project will proceed with the biweekly project-team cadence and the planned public-survey schedule; staff will return with further design and budget details as schematic design advances.
