Members of Tipton’s Mayor’s Youth Council presented a plan at the Board of Public Safety meeting to paint two community-designed crosswalks on Court Street, and the board gave conceptual approval so the students could continue coordinating final logistics with the street department.
The Blue Devil Builders — Joanna Gonzalez, Kylie Holton and Genshin Unimaker — told the board they want to finish two crosswalks by the end of the summer and involve local artists and businesses. “Our goal is to have 2 crosswalks completed by the end of the summer,” Gonzalez said. The students described a three-day closure timeline: pressure-wash day, painting day and sealing day, with reopening to traffic the next day.
The presenters said the project budget is about $7,000 for two crosswalks, to cover paint, sealing and power washing, and that they plan to seek local-business support and foundation grants. “We were working at $7,000 total,” Holton said, and added the group has discussed supplies with Dylan in the street department and would follow department guidance on closures and safety.
Board members emphasized that final design approval and formal closure permits must proceed through staff. Chair (Speaker 3) said the board would give conceptual permission for Court Street so the students could continue work with Dylan on timing and required paperwork, and recommended the design come back for final approval to avoid liability or noncompliance.
The motion to approve Court Street locations for the project was made and seconded and passed by voice vote, allowing the youth council to move forward with detailed plans and coordination with city staff.
Next steps: the youth council will continue refining designs with the street department and the city art committee, secure the funding they described, and return with final designs and the formal closure request for staff review and approval.
