David Roybal, who identified himself as a candidate for City Council District 3, told the council he represents the people who work in the city and expressed concern that changes to the scooter vendor could eliminate jobs. "I ain't gonna have a job after this week," he said, describing the impact on scooter workers and noting he had not been offered employment by the incoming vendor.
Roybal also focused on street safety: he criticized bike lanes that run with traffic and described several dangerous intersections where riders are frequently hit. "I don't agree with bike lanes that ride with traffic... it's more important to ride against traffic so when they're turning, they see you," he said. He asked for more enforcement of parking in bike lanes, ticketing for dangerous driving behavior, and more outreach or "ambassadors" to improve cyclist safety.
The comment combined economic concerns for workers who maintain scooters with street-safety recommendations and a call for greater enforcement and community representation in transportation planning. The council did not respond from the dais during the half-hour public comment period.
